The project

Surfmate connects surfers worldwide.

In the water, you don’t need anyone. Most of us love an empty lineup. But out of the water, we want surf friends who share our passion. For beginners and intermediates especially, finding a way into the scene is tough.

That’s where we come in. We bring surfers together, especially where surf is rare, show them events and places to connect, and in the long run, create our own.

We want to fight loneliness in surfing and do some good without changing what surfing is. We start with wave riding, followed by rapid surfing, then kitesurfing, windsurfing, wing foiling, and more.

What you’d actually do

We’re not looking for these exact roles. We’re looking for surfers who see what Surfmate can change, who want to be part of this community, bring their ideas and skills, and grow together as a team.

Developer

Backend & React Native

You work with Jolie on new app features and get brought into the backend step by step.

What you’ll do
  • Develop Surfmate together toward where the community wants it.
  • Build features in the React Native app, from the first version to a release.
  • Learn the backend with Jolie and take on API and data work as you go.
  • Work on the parts surfers use: logging sessions, spots, events, and finding other surfers.
  • Fix bugs and stay with a feature after it ships, so it holds up in real use.
You bring
  • Experience with backend development and React Native.
  • Curiosity, and the will to follow a feature from idea to release.

UX/UI Designer & User Research

You shape how Surfmate feels, together with Jolie.

What you’ll do
  • Work with Jolie to find out what users really want.
  • Figure out how Surfmate can help surfers connect and help each other.

  • You care how something feels to use, not only how it looks.

Graphic Designer

You shape how Surfmate looks wherever the brand shows up, online and at events.

What you’ll do
  • Design social graphics for Instagram and TikTok.
  • Create campaign visuals and keep a consistent look across a series of posts.
  • Make event materials: posters, booth graphics, and anything we hand out on site.
  • Apply the Surfmate look so app, web, and print feel like one brand.
You bring
  • Canva skills, and a feel for aesthetics.
  • You keep the branding consistent across print, web, the app, and Wear.
  • You design collab posts with other brands when we partner up, and make sure our branding isn’t lost.
  • You work closely with social media and our filmmakers and photographers on brand collabs.

Social Media Manager

You plan and run our channels on Instagram and TikTok.

What you’ll do
  • Plan and steer what we post on Instagram and TikTok.
  • Write the captions.
  • Stay in touch with the community.
  • Pay attention to what actually works.

  • A good feel for writing, and for trends.
  • You know how to keep things organized.

Filmmaker & Photographer

You’re at the water with a camera. Events are welcome, not required. What we need is photos and footage with the community feeling, and the look.

What you’ll do
  • Capture sessions and community moments at the water.
  • Deliver photos and footage we turn into content, with the feeling and the look of the community.
You bring
  • Experience with surf photography or filming.
  • Your own equipment.
  • You want to put the surf community on screen.
  • A plus: you travel a lot, or you live near the sea.

You bring Surfmate to new surfers, and you pay attention to what actually works.

What you’ll do
  • Set up creator collaborations and keep them useful for both sides.
  • Plan campaigns and ads aimed at surfers who don’t know Surfmate yet.
  • Watch the numbers and drop what doesn’t work.
  • Line growth up with content and events, so it stays part of the community.
You bring
  • Experience in online marketing, influencer marketing, or performance ads.
  • You enjoy looking at numbers.

Surf Events & On-site Planning

You keep track of what’s happening in the surf scene and plan where Surfmate shows up.

What you’ll do
  • Track contests, festivals, markets, and community events worth being part of.
  • Plan where Surfmate is next year, and what we actually do on site.
  • Prepare timing, materials, and the plan for the day.
  • Work alongside Marlene, who already covers networking, on-site presence, and rapid surfing.
You bring
  • A talent for organizing, and experience in event planning.

Surfmate Ambassadors

You surf, kite, windsurf, wing, or you’re a local at your wave or rapid spot. Help us bring Surfmate into your community.

What you’ll do
  • Introduce Surfmate to surfers you already know at your spot.
  • Share how you actually use it, in your discipline and your local scene.
  • Tell us what your community needs, so the product stays honest.
You bring
  • You’re part of a local wave, rapid, kite, wind, or wing community.
  • You like connecting people, without turning it into an ad.

Surfmate Wear, Shop & Gamification

You work with Jolie on the clothing brand, the shop, and a way to connect both with the app. The shop is being built to cover running costs, and to earn back what we’ve already spent.

What you’ll do
  • Help shape Surfmate Wear, produced sustainably in Portugal.
  • Build out the shop: what we sell, how it’s presented, and how an order feels.
  • Sketch a gamification idea that links the shop and the app.
  • Find concrete ways to connect the community and the brand.
You bring
  • Experience in fashion, e-commerce, or product development.
  • Ideas for bringing community and brand together.
